All of the glamorous galas taking place during the Cannes Film Festival are almost as eagerly anticipated as the movie premieres and prizes, and for 2012 Armani is the latest house to announce its involvement, by supporting charities including Sean Penn's Haitian Relief Organization. The Italian fashion house will present a gala evening May 18 in support of Sean Penn's J/P HRO (Haitian Relief Organization); Paul Haggis's Artists for Peace and Justice; and Petra Nemcova's Happy Hearts Fund and their work in Haiti since its devastating 2010 earthquake.
"It is an honor to be a part of Sean's remarkable life of service by joining his humanitarian efforts for the people of Haiti. For this to come to fruition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival marks a career milestone for me, and demonstrates what happens when you work with Sean, a world-class force of nature," said Giorgio Armani.
Other fashion houses involved in this year's Cannes Festival, which features French creator Jean Paul Gaultier on the judging panel, include Gucci -- which will be hosting a dinner and party at the iconic Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d'Antibes May 19. The party is in honor of the May 18 premiere of a new version of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America. The Italian fashion label has teamed with Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation for the restoration of the cinematic classic.
"We are pleased to be able to bring this particular film back to Cannes almost 30 years after its premiere there - only now, at long last and for the first time, restored to its complete length and glory as Leone originally intended," said Gucci creative director Frida Giannini.
Also, one of the most glamorous events taking place during the festival is the annual Cinema Against AIDS charity black tie event, which attracts some of the biggest names from fashion, music, business, and international society and will this year take place May 24 at the Eden Roc hotel.
Meanwhile, Cannes Film Festival official sponsor Chopard will host the annual Trophe Chopard May 17, which celebrates the talent of two rising actors each year. This will be followed by a party in the Chopard lounge at the Hotel Martinez. The label has also planned a "mystery" evening held in partnership with American producer Harvey Weinstein for May 21, with everyone including the guests finding out the location until the last minute.
